Following yesterday's announcement of the multifunction CrossoverGPS, Magellan has also revealed its eXplorist XL for outdoor travellers. Unlike the earlier device, the eXplorist XL is vertically-oriented for handheld use by hikers and is further toughened against drops and shocks through its rubber shell. The 3.5-inch screen is readable even in direct sunlight and is the largest of its kind for any dedicated GPS handheld, Magellan says. The company adds that its receiver is geotagging-friendly and bundles a management program that can share marked locations between the eXplorist and its host computer. Basic maps of North America are built into the system's memory, Magellan says, but owners can buy and transfer more detailed marine, sea, and trail maps via SD card to specialize its role. Magellan sells the XL today for $400.
