Apple Media Center Patent
Apple today published a patent that may point to a more full-fledged media center interface from the company. Dubbed a "Multi-media center for computing systems," the design revolves around a module controller element that would mediate between multiple devices and programs, allowing them to control media playback through plug-in software modules while presenting a consistent front-end to the entire experience.
While close in spirit to the Front Row interface seen in today's Macs and the Apple TV, neither the module controller nor the input given are limited in their choices, the patent shows. The module controller can be a separate hardware device and can be controlled by software on any compatible device -- including computers, remotes, and "media-player with remote control capabilities," Apple says.
The patent opens the door for both the development of refinements to the Apple TV, which officially accepts input only from the company's IR remote, as well as from future iPods, iPhones, and other portable players which could use their wireless connections to control and possibly stream media from one or more media-laden devices attached to a network.
News of the patent also comes just two days after Sling confirmed work on a similar technique for the Slingbox TV streaming hub that would let cellphones steer music and movies from the Apple TV over the Internet, suggesting that both companies are pursuing similar approaches to networked media.

...if proof were needed that somebody badly needs to burn down the USPTO if this is what they're letting people patent. Try this..."A methodology for the conveyance of mass through the alternating distribution of said mass via controllable conduit(s) such that the transposition of mass permits the unencumbered advancement of said conduit(s) and thereby permits the advancement or conveyance of said mass.." Also known as walking! Soon I won't be able to blink without violating somebody's patent!
