Sony VAIO Santa Rosa Leak

Much of Sony's future planning for its upcoming notebooks has been leaked, according to several sources. A Sony Europe product listing has detailed multiple changes that will follow shortly after Intel's Santa Rosa architecture appears, taking advantage of the improvements in processors and graphics. The most complete leak is that of the mainstream FZ-series (pictured): the new 15.4-inch model replaces the FE with a new design that includes more advanced media controls and a subtly integrated webcam.

The baseline performance also jumps signifcantly for every FZ model, Sony writes. The base FZ19 (PDF) starts with a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo using an 800MHz bus, 2GB of RAM, and faster Intel X3100 graphics; 120GB of hard drive storage is standard, which expands to 200GB at the top-end model along with a Blu-Ray drive and a dedicated (but still unknown) video chipset.

Perhaps a more dramatic change still will be the future VAIO TZ, an insider says. Using the ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo, the TX-series replacement is said to have a "completely new" black shell that integrates a webcam above the 11-inch widescreen and a redesigned keyboard to help typing in such a small area. A base model should be available with a 1.06GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a DVD rewriter; a higher-end version with 2GB of memory, 100GB of storage, and a fingerprint reader should also go on sale.

Sony further intends to expand the VAIO C with significant changes. While the CZ is likely to be a direct upgrade of the 13.3-inch system on sale today, the CR will add a slightly larger 14-inch screen and could have different features to match.

Lastly, the professional 13.3-inch SZ will also see an upgrade to the SZ5. As with the FZ, it too should have 2GB of memory but will use either a 1.83GHz or 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo from the previous generation and either a 120GB or 200GB hard drive.

All five system upgrades are expected for a July launch, two months after the formal introduction of Santa Rosa in May. Prices are unavailable, as are North American launch details which may vary from the predominantly European schedules made available during the leak. [via NotebookReview]
