NEC intros large MultiSync 20 Series

NEC wrapped up its week today with the release of two new large-format LCDs designed as much for PC use as for TVs. The 40-inch LCD4020 and 46-inch LCD4620 each feature a new pixel technology that helps in their sometimes specialized roles. Called CV12, the technique uses chevron-shaped pixels instead of rectangles; the change not only doubles the contrast compared to other full-color large LCDs at 1,200:1 but reduces the off-angle color shifts that can be especially problematic at that size. Bezels are about five times thinner than for many equivalent displays and make them ideal for video walls or other multi-display setups, NEC says.

Input options are suitably broad for the 1366x768-resolution screens depending on their versions. The LCD4020IT and LCD4620IT are focused solely on PC input with DVI, VGA, and co-ax video input through BNC; the AV versions add component and HDMI for HDTV signals but also add RCA, S-video, and a serial port for linking the displays with automated systems; a unique expansion slot is present to add an HDTV tuner or even future micro PCs that could fit in the back of the case.

The two sizes should be available before the end of June. Prices are set at $4,400 and $6,300 for the minimalist IT versions, but climb to $4,600 and $6,600 for the AV models.

1366x768?! What is this, 1998?

A 1080p Westinghouse would be better at a quarter the price?

These are basically industrial monitors - they aren't intended to be used at home for watching videos. They'll be purchased by AV companies and rented for conventions and events - they'll pay for themselves in a month's time. Your 1080p westinghouse might be fine in your living room but it wouldn't last a week as a rental item - and the higher contrast ratio with improved viewing angle makes a big difference when you're using a big LCD in a vertical orientation as signage.
