HP rolls out fast photo, all-in-one printers

Matching its camera releases, HP on Thursday expanded its Photosmart printers with two photo-oriented models and a full all-in-one unit. The D7260 and D7460 draw on six inks to print a 4-inch by 6-inch photo at full quality as quickly as 10 seconds, HP estimates. Standard images can also print at a rate of 34 pages per minute in black and white and only slightly slower at 33 pages per minute in color. Each also has a 3.5-inch touchscreen for basic PC-free image editing and a multi-format card reader for loading photos directly from a camera. The D7260 ships in August for $149; the premium D7460 adds Ethernet and wireless networking and launches at the same time for $179.

The Photosmart C5280 in turn is built for those printing to multiple formats and who also need copying or scanning. As a printer, the all-in-one inkjet can output up to 32 pages per minute in black-and-white or 24 in color, and supports writing labels directly to compatible CDs and DVDs. It also adds support for newer, high-capacity HP ink cartridges that last longer per tank. Scanning occurs at 4800x4800 DPI in 48-bit color and is optimized to 4800x1200 when used strictly as a copier. A smaller 2.4-inch screen provides navigation and photo editing when printing images from the integrated card reader.

The C5280 ships earliest of all three models, reaching stores this month at $149.

...after struggling with mac drivers for officejets d155 & 7410, both discontinued within a couple of years of shipping & still waiting for a fix for the last round of 7410 drivers, HP seems intent on planned obsolescence when in fact if they would just issue working drivers they might garner wider sales...
