Plantronics intros iPhone, notebook headsets

Plantronics and its sub-label Altec-Lansing today launched several new earphone sets, including a trio of headsets made for the iPhone and most cellphones. The Upgrader UHS 302, 306, and 307 each have inline microphones with volume control and a switch to flip between calls and music; the 302 is an over-the-ear design with clips to keep the pads at a proper fit, while the 306 and 307 both rely on in-ear tips with differences stemming from their choices of more quality-oriented SnugFit shape for the 306 and a stable, exercise-driven AirFit shape for the 307. Versions of these earphones without the microphone, named the UHP series, will also be available, Plantronics says.

Other output-only highlights include the in-hear UHP 101, 301, and 336; the over-the-head titanium UHP 304; the gaming-oriented, virtual surround UHP 405; and the UHP 805, which is designed for travel with active noise reduction. The UHS models ship with adapters for the iPhone as well as 2.5mm jacks, while all models arrive in August for prices to be set later.

Plantronics has also unveiled a single headset crafted just for notebook listening. The .Audio 480 Virtual Phone Booth is intended to create a perfectly quiet audio backdrop for IM and VoIP chats, and includes in-ear buds with a design that reduces wind noise and an adjustable boom microphone with noise cancellation. The Phone Booth packs up for travel and has inline volume. Versions arrive in August that connect either to conventional input and output jacks ($90) or through a single USB cable ($110); Mac support is provided only for the USB version, the company notes.
