Puretracks MP3 Store

Online music store Puretracks today announced a major expansion of its MP3 store, taking advantage of EMI's recent decision to offer protection-free music to Canadians. As with options available from Amazon and Apple, the new store allows buyers to optionally download DRM-free versions of any song available from the label, allowing them to be loaded on to the iPod and any device that supports MP3s. The universal format also allows Mac users to buy any content from the web-based store.

Pricing is favorable compared to iTunes Canada, with enhanced MP3s selling for $1.29 versus the $1.39 for Apple's AAC files. Windows users can also buy standard, protected Windows Media songs for the same 99 cents as before, Puretracks says. The EMI offerings also join a handful of significant independent worldwide labels which have already offered their tracks without restrictions, including Arts & Crafts (Broken Social Scene, Feist) and Beggars Banquet (Basement Jaxx, Prodigy).
