Nintendo Wii to remain in short supply

Wii production delay

The Nintendo Wii, which remains one of the best-selling of the next-generation console systems, has now had a production increase delayed, say sources within the company's Taiwanese component makers. Nintendo had been intending to boost the number of consoles built as early as June, but due to reduced supplies of ICs and PCBs, Nintendo will likely have to delay increased production until 2008.

By the beginning of June 2007, the total number of worldwide Wiis shipped had reached 9.27 million; this has not been enough however, as the Wii is still limited mainly to North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, and even those regions are reporting both official and anecdotal shortages of the console at retail. Attempting to buy a Wii in the United States can often involve calling multiple retailers to find a unit, or paying higher-than-list prices for used systems on Amazon or eBay. [via DigiTimes]
