Nikon unveils D300 SLR, new lenses

Calling it the most advanced DX-format digital SLR camera to date, Nikon has unveiled the 12.3 effective megapixel D300, which shares features with the newly introduced D3 digital SLR. Nikon claims a 0.13 second power-up time and a 45 millisecond shutter release lag time for the new camera. Using an image processing system that Nikon calls "EXPEED," the camera offers 51-point auto focus and two new LiveView shooting modes that aid in framing photographs using the 3-inch LCD monitor. The camera can shoot as many as eight frames per second when using the optional MB-D10 Multi-Power Battery Pack, and deliver continuous bursts of up to 100 consecutive shots the at full 12.3 megapixel resolution.

Other features include a Multi-CAM 3500DX auto focus module that features an array of 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors that can be used individually or in groups, and 3D tracking with automatic focus point switching that takes advantage of all 51 AF points as it uses color and light information to track the subject. There are both tripod and handheld modes, with the latter using the automatic TTL focusing system, with all 51-points and 15 cross-type points available. The camera is priced at $1800 and will be available in November.




Nikon also debuted two new lenses under the "NIKKOR" line. The new AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens is a 14mm ultra-wide angle zoom lens that Nikon claims is one of the fastest in its class, available immediately, while the new AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens is suitable for a wide range of applications and lighting conditions, and will be available in November. The lenses are designed for use with all FX and DX format digital SLR cameras, including the D3 FX-format digital SLR camera.



Both lenses incorporate ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, which Nikon says reduce chromatic distortion. The lenses are also aspherical and use Nano Crystal Coat, an extra-low refractive index coating that seeks to eliminate internal lens element reflections. They also sport "Silent Wave motor (AF-S)" that results in quieter auto focus operation.

The estimated selling price for the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens will be $1800 and the estimated selling price of the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED will be $1700.
