Palm Centro Photo Leak
What appear to be official product shots of the Palm Centro have been leaked, courtesy of a tip to Gizmodo. In stark contrast to earlier leaks that had shown the phone in a plastic white, the finshed model is black with a more professional aluminum trim. The QWERTY keypad also appears to have been redesigned to be easier to strike while still reducing the size well below that of the Treo, backing claims that the Centro is targeted at younger buyers.
No details of internal specifications are included, though the phone is expected to support EVDO Internet access, Bluetooth, and a rear camera. Media is very likely to be stored on either miniSD or microSD cards and could include SDHC support for 4GB or more of data.
The lone photo carries obvious Sprint branding and confirms the presence of a touchscreen, which will be used for simplified IM as well as for Palm's hallmark features. Current rumors would have Sprint launch the device in early October and dramatically undercut the price of the Treo 680, selling for $99 with a two-year contract. The provider is also reported to have 90 days of exclusive sales before Verizon and other rivals can sell their own versions.

Can we see some evidence that the keyboard size is smaller, it just looks like the keys could be bigger and closer together to me!?

wow! instant AOL messaging, iChat?? Something Apple hasn't got around to doing. Shaaaame!
You think Cingular/ATT had a hand in stopping iChat so that people would pay money for SMS?

Leopard and iChat

I'm willing to wager that as soon as Leopard becomes the OS of the iPhone, you'll get iChat and instant messaging. I think a lot of functions of the iPhone are hinging on the introduction of Leopard. I'll bet Apple didn't want to waste time retrofitting applications for Tiger on the iPhone.

retrofitting?

Um, 10.4 comes with iChat, so how would that be retrofitting? I think I'll take your wager!

teensy weensy keys

Those miniscule keys are horriffic. I'd much rather have a bigger screen with a scalable, on-screen stylus activated keyboard.
Why doesn't Palm release a Palm TX with telephone features?
The TX already has a 320 x 480 screen, along with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and an SD card slot. Call it the Palm Tel-X?
It's already there Palm! Use what little grey matter is still stuck between your collective ears and just DO it!

I come to this site for Apple news, not news of Apple's competitors.
