Creative ZEN Leak

Creative is readying a small, flash-based but video-focused media player that will directly challenge Apple's upcoming iPod nano replacement, according to Amazon leaks. Simply to be called the Creative ZEN, the jukebox will include the same 2.5-inch LCD as the leaked Apple player but will mount the controls to the side like the ZEN Vision:W to emphasize video playback. The display should also represent an image quality upgrade with a full 16.7 million colors on view. Capacities are also likely to match Apple's and those of the ZEN V Plus) with 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB of flash. An SD slot will give Creative an advantage by expanding storage by another 2GB, according to Amazon.

The ZEN should further support FM radio and all the video formats of the much larger ZEN Vision:M, including the enthusiast-friendly DivX and XviD standards. It will also fully support TiVo To Go video and protected movies from Amazon Unbox or Wal-Mart, Creative claims. The ZEN is set to debut this Friday at the IFA show in Berlin and will be available in the US at prices of $150, $200, and $300 for the 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB editions when they ship in September. Recto...

You zaid it. Seriously. When will these competitors understamd that it's the ease-of-use coupled with the iTunes/iTMS/iPod trinity? Sheesh. A Tuner? Oh boy, what a deal-maker that is. At least htere's no mention of coupling, or squirting, or whatever MS calls their failed attempt at file sharing between devices. Zen + Zune = Z End. (couldn't resist.)

So since no one is allowed to join in on that trinity, is your suggestion, then, that all competition should just stop?

    I have only owned iPods

And think this looks pretty decent, as does the upcoming Sansa Clip. Proof is in the pudding, so until I try them out I wouldn't know for sure. I for one am glad the competition is getting better. Competition is the only thing that really pushes innovation.

    nice device

seems like a cool little product to me. also would seem to confirm the design of the stout video-enabled nano. what will the competitive features of the new nano be in comparison? i'm guessing slimmer/smaller dimensions, lower prices, maybe greater capacity or resolution?

uh, no. His suggestion would be that all competition should focus on the experience, not features. Didn't you read the comment?

    um, dliup

That's .4 mm. That's less than half of a MILLImeter. That means if you take a meter stick, cut it up a thousand times... then cut it in half, you still have more than the difference.

I don't believe the support beam would fail because we were off by .4mm.

I don't believe the mars rover crashed because calulations were off by .4mm.

I don't believe ANY guy has ever heard, "I'd love to have s** with you, but I just prefer one that's .4mm thicker."

Point being, .4mm will not render my palm useless by the immense addition of weight. My pockets will not bulge so much that I get caught in an escalator, ending with my painful, agonizing, horribly ironic 'Zen'-like death.

    Buuuuut, for $250, fucka Zen.

More Than A Bit Of Bias?

1st – This ZEN supports SDHC Cards, which are currently available as large as 8gb (with 16gb soon to be released), making this a true 24gb (32gb) FLASH based DAP/PMP.

2nd – Comparing this to the Hard Drive based iPod 30gb is MOOT, as HDD players are clearly soon to be a technology whose time has passed for both its greater durability and undeniable media reliability.

3rd – The iPod’s alleged ease of use comes at the cost of limited codec support for both audio and video, and many consumers don’t care to be ‘locked’ into the ‘so called’ iPod trilogy.. LOL!
