Nikon S-series Fall 2007

Nikon used the launch of the IFA expo in Berlin to launch several new camera models, beginning with its high-profile COOLPIX S models. The pictured S51c is a major overhaul of the S50c that expands both the camera and its wireless ability. A connected S51c using Wi-Fi can now press a single button to e-mail a photo; the camera also links with Nikon's new my Picturetown service that serves as both as 2GB of online backup and a way of sending photos directly to Flickr or to friends. The S51c steps up resolution from 7.2 to 8.1 megapixels and also borrows the new EXPEED image processor from the D300 for improved quality. Nikon claims ISO 1600 sensitivity and balances this with true optical image stabilization. The 3X zoom camera should be available in September for $330.

Two strictly offline cameras in the S-series have also been upgraded: the 8.1-megapixel S510 and 12-megapixel S700 also draw on EXPEED but trade the lack of wireless for better light sensitivity; while the S510 scales to an already high ISO 2000, the S700 tops out at ISO 3200 without requiring a drop in resolution. The S700 is also one of the first COOLPIX models to include built-in correction for barrel distortion, straightening the edges of an image in particularly wide shots. Face detection has been improved to keep 12 people in focus for a single image.

Both cameras share 3X zoom lenses and use either a 2.5-inch (S510) or 2.7-inch (S700) preview LCD resistant to outdoor glare. They should follow the S51c into stores this September with prices of $300 and $380 respectively.
