Palm Treo on Sept 12

Palm intends to release a device on September 12th that is something other than the hotly anticipated Centro, according to company representative Stephanie Richardson. The smartphone maker emphasized that while it was still on track to release a new device in Europe on September 12th as confirmed by a teaser site, the actual product will be significantly different and hasn't been revealed to the public. "Check back later for more info," Richardson said.

The device may be the company's widely rumored Treo 800w, an upgraded high-end phone that would incorporate Wi-Fi, 128MB of RAM versus 64MB for current Treos, and 256MB of permanent storage. A version of the phone is already in reportedly in progress for CDMA networks such as Sprint but would need to be produced in a GSM form for European networks. 3.5G Internet access is also probable and is most likely to be supplied over HSDPA.

An American version of the unnamed device is also probable, as Palm initially launched its 3G Treo 750 for Europe in fall of last year but brought the device to its home country a few months later.
