LaCie debuts Ethernet Disk Mini Home Edition

LaCie today unveiled its Ethernet Disk mini Home Edition, a 500GB personal media server designed to save, show, sync, and share personal digital media. The server is the first commercial device to combine remote access through the internet with the ability to stream multimedia files through DLNA-compatible UPnP (Universal Plug-and-Play) media players while acting as an iTunes music server, according to the company. The Home Edition also includes specialized applications like DesktopMirror that can backup as well as restore files to the device for sharing or remote access. The device is due to ship in late October for $200.

The Home Edition comes pre-configured for drag-and-drop sharing of documents, music, photos, and videos. Powered by Axentra HipServ™, users can set up free remote access to personal information via LaCie’'s media portal, HomeLaCie.com, thus enabling the viewing of files securely via any Web browser. A HipServ’s easy-to-use menu allows users to grant customizable-access to friends and family through email invitations, and users can share as well as view photos locally on any UPnP TV or from any Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony Playstation 3.

10.5 is still covered under non-disclosure.

A legally binding contract.

From reading the manual, it appears the Windows support is better than the Mac support [missing backup], and the file sharing support seems to require the use of the bundled applications. Good luck using the device when LaCie stops updating the application…

Is it really that hard to use a standard protocol such as AFP?

...on a LaCie drive? It'll just die anyway.

So true. Of all the LaCie firewire drives we've had, the majority of them have either died or sound like they are about to. I wouldn't trust any data for long-term storage on those things.

I have a 200GB LaCie FW 800 drive and it's been running fine for over 3 years. The only problem is that it is really loud. I can hear it in the next room. I think I'll buy a few new drives from OWC for Time Machine and media storage.

support DivX? Oh please. DivX is only in these players because it was free on the chip that decodes formats that are actually useful. DivX is a codec for windows geeks to pirate video on the Internet.

Why is it necessary to use the HomeLaCie.com site to share files? Cant you just connect to the address of the device and work with it directly?
