Slingbox to receive BlackBerry support

Slingbox on BlackBerries

Sling Media, the creator of the Slingbox media streamer, has confirmed that it is currently working on a new version of its client software for Research in Motion's BlackBerry cellphones. Slingboxes let owners stream video from their TVs, DVRs or DVD players to laptops or cellphones via the Internet; the number of compatible cellphones is still being updated however, only recently having gained beta support for Symbian phones such as the N95. No date has been suggested for the release of the BlackBerry client.

The news is particularly well-timed, as RIM has only just begun releasing BlackBerries with Wi-Fi, such as the 8820. Wi-Fi is the ideal means of viewing Slingbox content, since it offers maximum bandwidth and does not tap into potentially costly cellular data fees. Those relying on cellular service will likely need a flat rate and a phone with 3G broadband, the latter not even being sold by RIM. [via Pocket-lint]

    Sprint and Verizon offer the BB8830, which has EVDO 3G network capabilities.
