Sony PS3 Big Bang Oct 12

Sony is planning a special event for October 12th that could overhaul the company's PlayStation 3 lineup, according to reported tips from specialty game retailers close to Sony. An event relating to the console is allegedly planned for that day and is known to Sony employees as the "big bang" for the hopes of sparking new life in the company's beleaguered game system. No details have been released as to what the event might involve, but a price drop for the system is the most likely candidate, GamePro France says. The magazine nonetheless claims that Europeans in particular would receive a special €449 ($639) bundle with Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, reducing the price significantly even compared to previous versions that came without software.

The publication stopped short of confirming American details but said it was likely Sony would use the event to at least drop the price of the 80GB PS3 by $100, which has been suggested by a Canadian flyer as well as various reports that suggested the console maker would reduce the 80GB model's price to $499 once the older 60GB version was out of stock. The report also lines up with separate leaks which suggested that Sony would introduce a 40GB PS3 at a $399 price in time for the holidays, offering most of the same features as the 80GB model but competing more directly with the $350 Xbox 360.
