PS3 Price Cut Friday Leak

Sony's largely confirmed PS3 price drop could occur as early as Friday, according to reports from the British games business. Pocket-lint refutes original suggestions that Sony was planning to wait until an October 12th "big bang" event to reveal a discount and instead suggests that an announcement will take place on Friday, shortly after a non-disclosure agreement for retailers expires and the stores can discuss the console maker's plans.

"We are currently under strict NDA, however that NDA runs out in the next 48 hours," said one of the retailers.

The report is also one of the first to outline the hardware changes beyond storage that would allow Sony to reach the lowest-ever price for its Blu-Ray gaming system. In Britain, the 40GB console would have a price of 299 and would shed both the card reader as well as two of its four front USB ports; it would still keep the WiFi access from earlier high-end models, the sources say. The 80GB model would sell for a real-world price of 349.

These prices are higher than in the US at $608 and $710 respectively, but would represent significant price cuts and make the cost of an HD-capable PS3 less expensive than an equivalent Xbox 360 Elite in the same country and supports notions of a $399 US PS3 with Spiderman 3 included. Today's 80GB PS3 would drop to $499 in current versions of this leak.

Sony has officially denied the announcement but has been known to issue these denials but contradict them regardless. During the summer, the company denied it would cut the 60GB PS3's price but did so just a few days later.
