LG on Cellphone Explosion

LG today brought an apparent end to the speculation that a cellphone explosion was responsible for the death of a Korean construction worker, calling the fire an attempt to disguise an accidental death. The 33-year-old victim had been accidentally hit with a 15-ton hydraulic drill rig that dealt the fatal blow; the cellphone had been set on fire to make it seem as though that was the actual cause, LG claims. The coworker who falsified the cause has since been charged with manslaughter.

This should put an end to "unfair" accusations that LG's cellphone batteries are potentially defective, the company says. The Korean firm argues that the lithium-ion packs for its phones are thoroughly tested and corroborates recent doubts from the press about the nature of the accident, which noted that no explosion of that size could produce the broken bones and other related injuries of the accident. Much of the initial concern surrounding the event has stemmed from a rash of notebook battery fires last year that ultimately resulted in a Sony recall of millions of lithium-ion batteries worldwide.
