Meizu M8 Prototype

Meizu's well-known M8 MiniOne touchscreen phone has reached the physical prototype stage, according to a post of photos slipped out in a leak from the company. Previously seen only in 3D computer models, the phone is now known to be in the prototype stage. It appears with plastic outer trim instead of the aluminum expected for the final version but otherwise confirms Meizu's intent to replicate the iPhone, including similarities between icons and the lone home button.

The prototype appears to be rough, with a relatively crudely cut mini USB connector and a screen image that is likely a static shot rather than a live interface. This status casts doubts on previous reports that suggest Meizu might debut at CES next month as a near-finished product. The phone is primarily meant for China and is unlikey to ship with support for calls outside of the country.

Additionally, the company is very likely produce a sequel of its own, the photo source says. So far labeled only the M9, the phone will be a direct sequel to the M8 and is expected sometime in 2009. Its features are expected to build on feedback from the first Meizu phone and are unofficially expected to take their cues from potential future iPhone models. [via MeizuMe]
