Apple to crack 5m iPhone sales by Macworld?

Apple may be poised to announce that it has sold a full five million iPhones by the time of the company's Macworld San Francisco Expo keynote in mid-January, according to an unverified report. Purported insiders suggest the company is on track to reach the figure due to extremely strong holiday-inspired sales as well as the added sales figures from international releases: roughly 1 million, or 20 percent, of these sales would come from outside the US, according to the claim.

Though yet to be directly corroborated, the figures are partly supported by past figures and recent estimates. Apple had sold just short of 1.4 million iPhones in the US alone by the end of September and is expected to see a lift from holiday shopping. The new head of British cellular carrier O2, Matthew Key, also estimated earlier this month that as many as 400,000 iPhones may be sold in the UK by the end of the holidays. In turn, estimates have suggested that Orange sold 30,000 iPhones in France during the device's first few days. German sales accounted for 10,000 on its first day in service with T-Mobile but have not been updated since the early November release.

Reaching 5 million would significantly ease Apple's goals of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008, a target the company had originally set at the unveiling of the iPhone in January of this year.

It's so unverified, the link points back to itself!

And purported insiders? Is this like a purported analyst?

MS kissing the studios...

So MS once again goes out of their way to help the studios w/ their draconian DRM and ads. It will be impossible for MS to ever compete w/ Apple as long as MS's focus is on pleasing the studios while Apple's is on pleasing the consumer.

Studio's views and consumer's views rarely equal each other, so that leaves a huge gap and I think Apple is doing a much better job currently, and hopefully continues to do so while MS screws it up.

can't possibly be wrong about the popularity of iPhones. He's prolly saying to himself, "Please don't let Apple sell five million iPhones, please sweet Jeebus." "Not after I declared only fools would buy an iPhone." "I hate eating humble pie and now I'm going to get fat off of eating it."

Bon appetit, but easy on the whipped cream. There's a heck of a lot more than five million fools in this whole wide world. At least 10 or 20 million, for sure.

I do have five friends (interestingly, no Mac users) that have bought an iPhone. But I don't really know what other phones people have bought, because all the others seem generic to me. The other phones simply aren't noticable enough to me. Not even nice looking phones the LG Chocolate.

I myself don't have an iPhone, and I'm not planning to buy one soon (my crap old phone is good enough for me)

LG phones sell in UK

Not sure if the UK will add all that large a number for Macworld. Last I read was the LG 3G with 5mpx camera (Viewty) was the fastest selling device. The "rush" for iPhones in the UK was underwhelming.... but hey Xmas my nephew changed his choice from an iPhone to hard cash. He did by himself an iPod Touch. Reason? He found the monthly charges too high and the lack of even the slow EDGE in his area was the deal killer... also no WiFi except at home. The iPhone will be mainly an America lust magnate until Apple brings out faster broadband, better camera with video, GPS a must. Till then it's rather sad except in America where we are just plain sad. I returned mine. Do not miss any aspect of it.

I never declared only fools would buy an iPhone. I knew a bunch of Apple/Jobs ass kissers would stand in line. Everyone knew that.

But are you actually taking this report seriously? Some unnamed 'insider' says Apple's on track... Right. The only reason you even bother to believe it is because it follows what you want to believe. If it said that Apple was only going to sell 2 million, you'd be slamming it because it certainly can't be true.
