MySpace Developer Platform

MySpace this morning firmed up details of the MySpace Developer Platform, its programming interface first announced in October that will let third parties write their own applications for the social networking site. Like Facebook's longstanding interface, developers will be able to hook their programs into some of MySpace's key features and will also have opportunities to collect revenues and advertise their apps on the larger MySpace network, according to the company.

Previous updates from MySpace have confirmed that it would support Google's OpenSocial to ensure that apps written for MySpace will work elsewhere or that others can be ported into a member's profile. How much of this is implemented in the initial MySpace platform is currently unclear.

The full programming kit for the Developer Platform is accepting pre-registrations today and should be available to download and use as of February 5th. In addition to the US, at least 28 of MySpace's country-specific sites will also support third-party apps upon launch.
