Tuesday, April 1stNovatel USB modems bring world 3G, GPS
Novatel used the occasion of the CTIA show to upgrade its Ovation line with a pair of USB modems capable of 3G-grade Internet access in most parts of the world and on nearly any computer, including the MacBook Air. Both the MC990D and the North America-minded MC992D connect to the fastest HSPA networks in the world and download at up to 7.2Mbps while uploading at up to 5.76Mbps in peak conditions. The MC990D is tuned primarily for the 900MHz and 2100MHz bands used by Europe and most parts of the world, while the MC992D is more receptive for AT&T, Fido, and Rogers in North America.
In addition to their data, both also include their own GPS receivers for navigation and double as microSD card adapters through a built-in slot. First install is relatively simple on Windows PCs with drivers set to install from built-in memory; Mac users can also install drivers separately. Novatel also lists the new Ovations as its first to come bundled with a USB extension cable and display clip to ensure they work with the MacBook Air and other very thin notebooks out of the box.
The company has not announced any carrier plans, but expects providers to start offering the MC990 series during the summer.
