BlackBerry India Solution
A solution may be in place to prevent a ban on BlackBerries in India by next week, the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) says. With the smartphones' creator Research in Motion facing a 15-day ultimatum, the company is reportedly cooperating and could have a requested monitoring system in place by the start of next week, allowing the Indian government to watch for security threats on the BlackBerry push e-mail network.
RIM has declined to comment on the situation but will likely have to present its solution by April 9th, when the Canadian company next sits down to discuss the situation with Indian officials.
The potential block on BlackBerry service is considered a complex but potentially damaging one to RIM, which is estimated to have at least 400,000 active BlackBerry users in the country but must support them over four national carriers, including Bharti Airtel, BPL Mobile, Reliance, and Vodafone. The phone designer is said to have approximately 14 million subscribers as of early 2008.
