Toshiba X205 Penryn

In addition to re-revealing its new Satellite designs, Toshiba on Tuesday updated its Satellite X205 gaming notebook to take advantage of newer hardware. The 17-inch desktop replacement now draws on at least a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo from Intel's Penryn era that offers both extra speed as well as better battery life. It also includes at least 320GB of storage split across two drives, each of which spin at 7,200RPM: the speed provides desktop-like load times without sacrificing space, according to Toshiba.

Video performance is still claimed as the X205's signature, with two GeForce 8600M GTs in SLI providing relatively affordable 3D performance. Every system also ships with 3GB of RAM to handle Vista and modern games, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a four-satellite, one-subwoofer speaker system that provides enough sound to replace some external speakers.

The base $2,000 SLi5 variant offers the base 2.4GHz chip and 320GB of storage as well as a 1440x900 display resolution. Spending extra for the $2,500 SLi6 increases speed with a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo, increases storage to 400GB, and sharpens the display resolution to 1680x1050. Both should be available today either from Toshiba's online shop or from retail stores.
