Archos unveils GPS add-on for 605 jukebox

Archos this afternoon launched the 605 GPS, a combination of both its staple 605 Wi-Fi media player and a navigation add-on. The attachment provides a SiRF III GPS receiver that integrates tightly with the media player; when docked in a special car cradle, the 605 and its module supply driving directions as well as features normally available only in dedicated mapping units. The device can subscribe to either free or paid traffic warning systems and includes a one-year free subscription to an accident notification service. Archos' system is intelligent enough to recognize a signal drop and will simulate position changes until a satellite lock returns.

The 605 GPS uses its built-in media features to its advantage by broadcasting directions through its line-out jack and letting users play the device's normal mix of music and video when navigation isn't necessary. Archos intends to ship its GPS solution worldwide and will pre-supply the North American model with maps both for its own continent as well as China and Europe. A 30GB version of the Mac- and Windows-compatible 605 Wi-Fi will come with the GPS receiver in May for $400; owners of existing versions or those who want to choose their storage will have the option of buying the navigation component separately for $130.

Now if they will just add PDA functions this thing will be just about perfect.
