Hitachi launches UltraThin TVs in US

Hitachi UltraThin TVs ship

Hitachi has announced that its UltraThin LCDs, first announced at January's CES expo, are now beginning to ship in American versions. Their name derives from their thickness, which measures only 1.5 inches at the deepest point; this may come at a cost of screen size however, as only 32, 37, 43 and 47-inch models are planned. The sets are further divided into regular V (UltraVision) and high-end X (Director's Series) models, though aside from an extended warranty, Hitachi has not specified what makes the Director's Series special.

The only UltraThin currently shipping is the 37-inch inch UT37X902, which as with most of its peers is 1080p-capable, and supports 120Hz refresh rates; its price is $2,999. Coming in May will be the UT42X902 at $3,699, while July will see the first V sets, the UT37V702 and UT42V702 ($2,799 and $3,499). Further releases will continue into September, when the top-end UT47X902 ($4,699) ships.

All 32-inch models are limited to 720p, and in some cases only have 60Hz refresh rates.
