Windows XP SP3 available

Microsoft on Tuesday resumed the availability of Windows XP SP3 at its website. Last week, the company pulled the update from its public servers due to some compatibility issues; it delayed the general release of Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), due to a last-minute discovered incompatibility. The update, released to manufacturing two weeks ago, was expected to be generally available on April 29th and later in early Summer as an automatic update. Microsoft said it is now offering "hotfix" for the compatibility issues with its Dynamics Retail Management System, which it says should be installed first.

This third official XP service pack includes all previously released Windows XP updates, including security updates and hotfixes, and select out-of-band releases as well as new functionality such as Network Access Protection (NAP), an update of Windows Product Activation, and security improvements such as improved black hole router detection (those that are silently discarding packets).

The update is available via the Windows Update as a 67MB or as a direct download.

what's the deal with IE? The installation notes indicate that you should remove IE7 (and/or the beta for IE 8), or you won't be able to uninstall them "after" applying SP3.

eh,.. what?

If you don't have IE 7 installed already, SP3 will install the updates for IE 6 and give you the option to install IE 7 as a seperate install. If you already have IE 7 installed it will install the updates for IE 7 which makes it impossible to remove IE 7 after because of how it combines the IE 7 updates as a SP3 install. I actually like how they did it instead of forcing every one to use IE 7. At Work we still use only IE 6 because of compatability issues with our Intranet and IE 7.
