Dash allows third-party apps development for Express

The recently launched Dash Express navigation system can now be used to do more than just upload maps or run live Yahoo Search updates thanks to its Internet connection, the company announced on Wednesday. Dash opened its service platform to third-party developers, allowing them to create applications for the portable navigation device. To show off what's possible, the company also announce five new such applications, called DashApps.

The new applications were developed in conjunction with five companies for the new dynamic API. The Coldwell Banker Home Search button finds local real estate listings on the internet and can guide the driver there. A myFUNAMBOL Calendar button syncs with users' electronic calendars, including from Outlook, Yahoo! and Google, allows to get navigation to the addresses contained in them.

A more entertaining application is the MediaGuide-developed BakTrax Radio, which informs users of the name of the last three songs they heard on a pre-set AM or FM station. The Trapster Find Traps Now application warns drivers of live speed traps and red light cameras and allows them to upload information on their locations as well. Finally, MyWeatherBug provides information on current and upcoming weather conditions.

Access to the Internet necessitates a $10-per-month subscription fee on a two-year contract. The newly created DashApps will be available for download starting tomorrow, May 15.
