JVC's dual codec LSI chip

Japan's Victor-JVC has developed a dual-codec video camera LSI (Large-Scale Integration) chip, the company announced on Monday. The HD Gigabrid chip allows recording of HD videos in the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format as well as the Internet- and YouTube-friendly MPEG-2 codec, both at the same time. The chip allows for Full HD (1920x1080p) recording, and is capable of extended HD recording with a 5MBps setting. MPEG-2 format video can be written at 27MBps.

A dedicated DMA (Direct Memory Access) circuit will allow both formats to be recorded at the same time, while external memory and new codec processing programs will help keep the chip's size small while keeping processing speeds fast. Victor-JVC said it would also use common blocks for its Motion Detection and Motion Compensation features to keep the chip's footprint to a minimum.

The new chips are expected to launch in JVC's Everio line of camcorders in the near future, although no official dates have been announced. [via Akihabara]
