Sony Ericsson intros C905, S302 camera phones

Continuing a string of announcements, Sony Ericsson on Tuesday has swung its attention to its camera phones. The C905 is the handset maker's first Cyber-shot slider and shoots at 8.1 megapixels -- an unprecedented resolution for any of the company's cellphones. The sensor is backed up by a xenon flash as well as digital autofocusing that supports face detection and image stabilization. The device also incorporates real GPS and uses the positioning feature both for mapping and to geotag shots.

The handset further serves as a small-scale media hub with Wi-Fi that lets it share photos or other media to any other device on the local network that supports DLNA media streaming, including the PS3 and some HDTVs.

Sony Ericsson bundles the C905 with a 2GB Memory Stick Micro and will ship the phone in the fall; a North American version, the C905a, will support HSDPA-based 3G Internet access on AT&T in the US and Rogers in Canada, while the C905i and C905c will target data support internationally and in China respectively.

Scaling down, the S302 Snapshot is aimed at entry-level users who still care about photo quality with a 2-megapixel camera and a camera-like menu that also includes minor on-camera editing. The S302 also supports Memory Stick Micro and is due at the same time as the C905; it will also work in North America but is capped at EDGE for data.
