WD MyBook Mirror offers doubled backups

updated 09:45 am EDT, Wed June 18, 2008

WD MyBook Mirror Edition

Western Digital is today expanding its MyBook line with its first truly redundant backup drive. Instead of simply using additional drives for extra capacity, the MyBook Mirror Edition comes out of the box set up in a RAID 1 mirror that automatically backs up one drive's information on the second. The layout can be used either to rely solely on an external drive for certain data or to add a second layer to an existing backup. The casing is accessible and lets users swap out the drives either to replace a damaged drive or to swap both drives in the future.

Users who want to reclaim the second drive for extra space can either toggle the drive to a RAID 0 stripe for one large, contiguous space or else use each drive separately. The array is pre-formatted for Windows and comes with appropriate automated backup software, but can be reformatted for Mac OS X for use with Time Machine or simply as added storage.

The Mirror Edition connects through USB and is already available for $290 in a 1TB (2x500GB) model or $550 for a 2TB (2x1TB) upgraded version.

    Same As Before...

What is it with WD and all these versions of effectively the exact same device?

They sell Mac formatted dual-disk units in a gray case, PC formatted ones in a black case... Different product names, yet they're interchangeable, technically speaking.

And now this mirrored business. The MyBook Pro Premium whatever dual-drives have always been configurable as RAID 0 or 1 using their utility...

Maybe the owner of Western Digital is married to one of my branding agency clients...

Not gonna help if the ceiling caves in or fire burns the place down_ Having off site backup and a local backup is usually best_
