Samsung's new laptops

NotebookItalia.it unveiled five new laptops from Samsung today, with the Q210 and Q310 in the Eclipse range, the value-oriented Aura R510, the fashion-conscious R560, and desktop-replacement R710. All are powered by Intel Core 2 Duo chips, with the R710 sporting a 2.53GHz processor. The R710 sports a large 17-inch LCD with 1920x1080 (WUXGA) resolution and is meant for users who want all the functionality of a desktop PC but be able to take it with them. The R710 makes that possible with 4GB of DDR3 memory and optional NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card with 512MB of onboard memory. The standard GPU will be the GeForce 9300M GS.

To take advantage of its large display, the R710 comes with a Blu-ray optical drive. In the event users want to use it as a player only, the HDMI output allows it to connect with HDTVs. A 7-in-1 card reader is integrated, as are 4 USB ports, a 54mm PCI Express Card slot, and VGA port. The 5400RPM SATA hard drive capacity is 320GB, and the R710 comes preloaded with Windows Vista Premium. Like the rest of the new laptops, the R710 features Samsung's Protect-o-Edge design that allows it to endure physical stress such as shocks from drops.

The R560 sports a 15.4-inch display capable of 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) resolution thanks to the optional NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics chipset, otherwise the same GeForce 9600M GS card with 256MB built-in does the job. Its Intel processor is rated at 2.8GHz, and works with 4GB of DDR3 memory. All other specs are nearly identical to the R710, including a 320GB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, 7-in-1 card reader, and connections, with the exception being one less USB port, at 3.

As the value-minded offering, the Aura 510 shares its chassis with the R560, including the 15.4-inch display, but the not as lavishly finished. The display may be the same size, but its resolution is 1280x800 (WXGA) pixels due to its Intel X4500HD integrated graphics card. The same 320GB SATA drive ships with Windows Vista Premium and there is an included HDMI port, though no Blu-ray drive, with a DVD burner with Super Multi Lightscribe capabilities in its place.

The two new laptops from the Eclipse series include the 12.1-inch Q210 and 13.3-inch Q310, with either capable of 1280x800 (WXGA) resolution. The Q210, which replaces the Q45, uses a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip, while the Q310 ups the ante with a 2.4GHz version. Both share the same 4GB of DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA's GeForce 9200M GS graphics card with onboard 256MB and an integrated HDMI output. Other external connections comprising a 34mm PCI Express slot and 3 USB ports, and the Q310 has an integrated 7-in-1 memory card reader, while the Q210 makes do with a 3-in-1.

Wireless connectivity options common to all five new releases comprise integrated 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, while an Ethernet card allows network support. Also, all include a 1.3-megapixel integrated webcam. Samsung's Silver Nano technology has been used to coat the keyboards of all five new laptops, eliminating virtually all bacteria.

All laptops will launch this September, though no prices have been revealed.
