As tremendous as the original iPhone's impact was, the iPhone 3G is arguably Apple's most important iPhone ever: it not only has to fix as many of the first-run problems as possible but also represent Apple in new but notoriously unforgiving markets such as Japan. With that kind of burden on its shoulders, the company is in the unenviable position of trying to please everyone on just its second try. Our full review of the iPhone 3G shows that Apple has come a long way in just a year and has one of its best products yet, but also that it still has a ways to go -- and has made a few sacrifices to overcome its earlier hurdles.

most important .. ever?
Seems an odd use of the expression when it is only the second generation- I have heard the next model will have a built in teleport....
Windows Mobile
I have to second the observation on how other phones handle web content -- my Windows Mobile phone (aside from the fun that I have sync-ing it) is absolutely bloody useless for web browsing.
Take your usual IE window, shrink it to be 200 pixels wide and 600 tall and watch in amazement as half the content gets reflowed to something largely illegible, while the other half stays exactly where it is out of 'respect' for CSS. I have to send out a search party using a grid/column search pattern to find the content I want because it also doesn't seem to to have a 'Find' function that's readily accessible.
The only thing that makes it work (aside from the price here in the UK) is that IMAP email functionality (and Exchange stuff) is excellent.
Software
Battery issues according to Mossberg are a real problem considering we can't change the battery.
Having used phones with 3G the times when I am out and I need to read the news is rare, called having friends. At work or home wifi suffices.
The big downer, mitigated by wifi towers, is the cheap small GPS device that will not locate those of us in NYC unless we are line of sight.
Still it's a great phone. I love mine. Really pleased not to have plastic all over.
