NVIDIA Cuts GTX Prices
NVIDIA this morning confirmed its planned price cuts and today slashed the costs it dictates for GeForce GTX graphics cards. The top-end GeForce GTX 280 sees the steepest decline and drops from $649 to $499 for a typical 1GB card; the more mid-range GeForce GTX 260 also drops from its earlier $399 to $299 for an 896MB card. The prices should take effect almost immediately but may vary for non-standard cards from certain board makers.
The company is known to be making the cuts explicitly due to AMD's ATI Radeon HD 4870, which at $299 is widely accepted to have equal or at times better performance than the GTX 260. NVIDIA's partners had complained that they would lose business without the lower prices and have reportedly needed a price guarantee from NVIDIA to remain in business.
AMD is also understood to be planning the release of the Radeon HD 4870 X2, which will be price-competitive with the GTX 280 and may offer similar or better performance. [via Inquirer]
