Acer's Centrino 2 laptops
Acer today unveiled information on nine new notebooks that take advantage of the recently introduced Intel Centrino 2 platform that uses faster processors and a 1,066MHz system bus, among other changes. The four new Aspire-line notebooks will also sport WiMAX functionality and be tailored for the multimedia user, while the five TravelMates notebooks are geared towards business users. While Acer has been thin on details, the company did reveal some information on the new notebooks.
The first of the Aspires is the compact 12.1-inch 2930, which features Acer's Gemstone design, and integrated 3D graphics. Next up is the Aspire 4930, which brings a 14.1-inch CrystalBrite display and NVIDIA GeForce graphics card for an advanced viewing experience. It supports second-generation Dolby Home Theater and an HDMI interface to output video to HDTVs. The 5930 is improved for moie viewing, with a 15.4-inch wide screen and NVIDIA PureVideo HD for video acceleration. A Blu-ray optical drive is optional. The last new Aspire notebook is the 7730, boasting a 17-inch display with discreet graphics and the option of Blu-ray. It also features Intel's Wireless WiFi Link 5100/5300 in addition to the Centrino 2's built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi support.
The TravelMate range starts with the portable 12.1-inch 6293. It comes standard with an optical drive and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi courtesy of the new Centrino 2 chipset. It can be ordered with up to 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. For communications, there is a built-in webcam and the option of a VoIP Bluetooth phone. When a network isn't available, the optional GSM/GPRS/EDGE broadband data network can be called upon.
Stepping up to the 6493 will see a 14.1-inch display and an Intel Core 2 Duo vPro processor set in Intel 64-bit architecture and with Intel Virtualization technology. In addition to mobile broadband support, the WiMAX-ready notebook can be optioned to have up to 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and an optical drive.
The 15.4-inch TravelMate 6593 comes with the Intel Centrino 2 vPro chip meant for business use, which allows remote management and added security. Graphics options will include ATI's Mobility Radeon graphics chip or Intelís integrated graphics. The 320GB hard drive will be supplanted by a MediaBay which will allow the optical drive to be swapped out for a secondary HDD, optical drive or another battery. Mobile broadband and WiMAX will be optional.
The 5730 shares the 15.4-inch display of the 6593, but straddles the line in terms of business or pleasure use. Buyers will get the choice of ATI's Mobility Radeon or NVIDA GeForce graphics cards as well as a Blu-ray drive.
The flagship of the TravelMate range will be the 7730 desktop replacement, with its 17-inch display. It will support up to 4GB of RAM, and also offer a choice of NVIDIA or ATI graphics and Blu-ray drive.
Acer did not announce other specifics, including the ship dates nor pricing for the models. [via LAPTOP]
