Rogers drops Nokia N95 to $199 post-iPhone

Rogers along with Nokia today announced a price cut on the N95 8GB to $199 with a three-year contract from its normal $400 on the same terms. The drop takes effect immediately and is already believed to be prompted by the launch of the iPhone 3G in the country last week, which undercuts the price of the Nokia smartphone for the same amount of storage and media playback. It's unclear as of press time whether the discount also applies to shorter contracts or contract-free use.

The price slash for the device also accompanies Rogers' recent 3G smartphone promo plan, which is intended to address concerns about data from iPhone users but which can be applied to the N95 8GB as well as most of Rogers' other 3G cellphones until the end of August. The extension provides headroom for using the device with not just browsing and e-mail but also Nokia Maps and other third-party applications that need frequent Internet access.

3 yr contract?

Wow, I thought US wireless carriers sucked with their 2 yr contracts...3 yrs is brutal. No way I could wait 3 yrs between getting a new phone. And yes, I do consider it extortion for carriers to sell phones for the "non-upgrade" price which is complete BS.
