Sony ships BDP-S350

Sony on Wednesday shipped the BDP-S350, a new incarnation of its S300 Blu-ray player that is based off Blu-ray Profile 2.0, which introduces a number of new features, including access to BD-Live Internet extras. Sony bills the player as BD-Live ready, saying that a patch will be available later this year, which can be downloaded through the player's built-in Ethernet port. In addition, the BDP-S350 adds support for BonusView (picture-in-picture), while featuring a speedier boot time and an external port for local BD-Live storage.

The BDP-S350 includes Sony's Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology, allowing users to enhance standard-definition signals to 1080p high-definition, outputting a full HD image across HDMI. Sony also offers Precision Drive HD, which prevents discs from wobbling inside the player from three directions.

Sony optimized the design and enviro-consciousness of the player as well, claiming the unit uses 21-percent less power in playback, and 43-percent reduced power consumption in stand-by. The BDP-S350 has shrunk 55-percent, reducing packing material by 52-percent, and total weight by 38-percent.

Sony says that the reduced dimensions allot for 43-percent less CO2 emissions, related to shipping, while the box, manual, and shipping material are 70-percent recycled paper, and printed with Volatile Organic Compound-free vegetable oil-based ink. The player itself is constructed using lead-free solder.
