LG makes deals with US cablecos for tru2way HD

LG on Monday said it has struck deals with US cable providers to get support for tru2way, the new two-directional HD video standard. A memorandum of understanding between LG and six US cable providers should see the latter offer support for tru2way on their networks, letting HDTVs from LG and other set makers supply HDTV with interactive options such as video on demand or more advanced programming guides without needing a separate device.

CableCARD, the ancestor of tru2way, allows protected HDTV but is limited to one-way output that limits it to normal TV channels and has discouraged cable providers from giving official support to the format.

Korea-based LG doesn't say when tru2way should be available at the cable providers themselves, but expects TVs of its own with built-in support sometime in 2009. The providers are all large firms and include companies such as Comcast, Cox, and Time Warner Cable.
