BenQ ships greener 16:9 ratio computer LCDs

updated 07:25 am EDT, Fri August 8, 2008

BenQ E900HD and G900HD

BenQ is concluding its week with the launch of two displays it believes will match two hotter trends. The designer E900HD and the simpler G900HD both have 18.5-inch, 1366x768 displays that match the same 16:9 ratio and resolution of a 720p-capable HDTV and are better-suited to watching HD content without black bars. Through a unique backlighting system, however, the company says it can produce the same 300-nit brightness as most displays by using a two-lamp backlight versus the four that would otherwise be necessary. That reduces the power use to just 30W and cuts the amount of toxic mercury in the panel by half, BenQ says.

The Taiwan-area display producer also claims an unusually vivid picture with a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, a 5ms pixel response time, and the option of automatic or preset color adjustment. Apart from its aesthetics, the E900HD improves on the G900HD by adding stereo speakers and a headphone jack for private listening.

Both screens include both DVI with HDCP encryption support and a VGA connection for older sources. Prices are unavailable as with most BenQ launches, though the company says it will launch both displays this month in the Asia-Pacific region (including China), Europe, and Latin American countries. A North American release isn't specified with the current release.

    greener? who cares?

The label should be more efficient (although I'd like to see an area map of brightness levels (even coverage?) before saying 2 lamps can do the job of 4.

For those of you who haven't seen the stats lately, there is a quickly growing majority of people around the world that are realizing the uselessness and narcissism of the "green" market ploy.
