Canon Aug 2008 Printers

Canon geared up its back-to-school efforts with a pair of all-in-one printers and a trio of scanners. Aside from a more streamlined design, the PIXMA MP480 and the simpler MP190 both print faster, producing color images at 16 and 15 pages per second respectively (20/19 in black and white). The MP480 is similarly fast at generating full-quality four-by-six inch images and will create a borderless example in as little as 45 seconds versus the 70 of the MP190.

The MP480 further adds a slew of automatic features to reduce the need for editing: an Auto Photo Fix mode automatically adjusts for red-eye and other common photo mistakes, while Auto Scan can recognize document types on the 4800x1200DPI scanner and crop accordingly to reduce the file size.

Apart from speed and sensors, the MP480 also improves on the MP190 with a 1.8-inch preview LCD for editing and the option of a Bluetooth adapter for wireless printing from certain cellphones and PCs. Both PIXMAs should be available very soon with just a $30 price difference separating the $70 MP190 and the $100 MP480. The Bluetooth adapter sells by itself for $50.

Those just interested in scanning have multiple higher-end options. The CanoScan 5600F is intended for those archiving 35mm film or slides and captures these as well as regular documents at up to 4800x9600DPI; it additionally brings automatic dust, grain and scratch correction for vintage shots, and has a white LED to reduce the startup time versus a traditional lamp. The LiDE 200 and LiDE 100 are targeted at regular scanning use and also capture at lower 4800x4800 and 2400x4800 resolutions respectively. They too get the automatic image correction feature of the CanoScan. All three scanners arrive in September and sell from $60 for the LiDE 100, $90 for the LiDE 200, and $150 for the 5600F.
