Imation SSD Upgrade

Imation on Monday announced the introduction of two new products to its range of solid-state drives (SSDs), with the PRO 7500 and the PRO 7000 PATA. The former represents the application of Imation's latest and most advanced SSD technology, with improvements to speed and storage capacity, while the latter's Parallel ATA interface allows older equipment to benefit from SSD technology.

Either new drive is available in both 2.5- and 3.5-inch configurations and capacities that include 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, although the 2.5-inch PRO 7000 PATA SSD tops out at 64GB.

The PRO 7500 SSD is aimed at uses in high-performance computers, storage arrays and servers. A higher-performance internal data bus combined with Serial ATA lets it reach 130MB/sec read speeds and 120MB/sec write speeds, while input and output operations per second (IOPS) performance is rated at 83,000 sequential reads and 19,000 random reads for each second. The PRO 7000 PATA has the same read and write speeds but IOPS performance is lower, at 27,000 sequential reads and 18,000 random reads.

Imation SSDs B SDRAM buffer connected via an ultra high speed data buffer to speed up data processing.

Both the PRO 7500 and PRO 7000 drives use Korean company Mtron's controller interface, which uses a 16MB cache, and are available now with prices starting at $500 for 2.5-inch, 16GB versions.
