Averatec to intro netbook?

Averatec, TriGem Computer Inc.'s brand name, is admitting to jumping on the proverbial bandwagon and is working on introducing a netbook to the highly competitive market. The new, unnamed laptop will slot in under the company's 12.1-inch 2575 notebook, replacing it as its smallest offering, and, like the majority of competing products, will also use an Intel Atom processor.

The estimated 10.2-inch screen size of the Averatec netbook will make it one of the larger offerings in the class, but according to the company's marketing department is a deliberate move as it tries to cater to users who want the full functionality of a laptop in a smaller package.

The netbook will have a keyboard nearly matching the size of proper laptops, with a hard drive also nearly as big, expected to be in the vicinity of 120GB. The computer should weigh less than three pounds.

Unlike most other companies in the market, Averatec will also sell the mini netbooks in stores, taking advantage of its strong relationship with retailers. The Averatec netbook is expected to ship in time for the holiday shopping season, with prices expected to start at about $400 or $500. [via Gadgetress]
