Jobs: fix for iPhone lockup coming in Sept.

In response to one user's concerns – and potentially thousands of others' by proxy – Apple CEO Steve Jobs has personally, but briefly, addressed that the various iPhone app freezes would be resolved through a software update in September. For the past several weeks, users have been experiencing issues with third-party applications freezing the system, failing to start, or even halting the device's boot process, prompting a sometimes lengthy restore through iTunes, according to AppleInsider.

"This is a known iPhone bug that is being fixed in the next software update in September," says the sparse note from Jobs.

Some users have found solace from the issue by reinstalling problematic applications, while others have had to reformat the device since it refused to boot. The issue is not always immediately prevalent either, since one-time behaving apps can lead to the aforementioned problems.

Apple quickly released the iPhone 2.0.1 update following the launch of the v2.0 operating system, in an effort to resolve some bugs, and pursued it with v2.0.2 when the initial update failed to do so. Neither update fixed the issues, and even introduced them to otherwise unaffected users.

The only application that has locked up my phone so far is Safari. I could not get it to respond at all. It froze while loading a page and I just had to wait for it to drain the battery. Thank god I didn't need to make an emergency phone call.
