NAVIGON in the wake of IFA switched its attention back to North America with the launch of a budget GPS that has features that were once saved only for higher-end units. The 2200T makes good on a recent promise by the company to offer free traffic warnings for the lifetime of its devices and is currently the least expensive device of the type. Even entry-level customers can now reroute around traffic jams and accidents without having to pay for a subscription, the company explains.
While the 3.5-inch screen keeps the price down, the onboard software is also uncharacteristic of the class with lane assist for more complex roads and the company's in-house Reality View Pro, which shows a perspective view of street signs and larger exits or interchanges where a specific path might be necessary. NAVIGON also touts its most recent streamlined interface and voice readouts of street names.
The 2200T carries maps for both Canada and the US, and will sell soon for $229. While traffic updates are free, the GPS producer charges for map updates and provides an $80 pack that gives as many as 12 updates over the space of three years.
