iPod nano 4G photo, details [new orig photo]

MacNN can confirm the existence of the fourth-generation iPod nano and has obtained a verified authentic photo of the Apple music player. The device exactly matches claims by Digg founder Kevin Rose of a tall, tapered design and is enclosed in wrap-around aluminum, as with the second-generation model. It also has the same offset Dock Connector placement of the 2006 version and marks the return of at least one color that had previously disappeared from the iPod lineup: the example shown to MacNN comes in the same metallic orange as the early 2007 iPod shuffle update. Other colors will be more vibrant than the pale hues from the third-generation nano, according to the sources.

Similar packaging to earlier low-end iPods will also accompany the nano and are visible in the shot.

Most other details of the device are unknown, though people familiar with the update say the new player will be shipping as of next week, likely almost immediately after the "Let's Rock" event, and will be exempt from the last week of the back-to-school promo that provides a free iPod along with the purchase of a Mac. Most observers expect Apple to maintain similar pricing to the outgoing models but double capacity to 16GB in high-end trim. (Note: image deliberately obscured)

Another "leaked" photo that (again) just happens to be out of focus?

Likely a mock-up

Likely a mock-up. Simple enough considering the basics of iPod design. A quick print from a inkjet printer, xacto blade and an old 2G nano box and Bob's your uncle. Mocked up way more complex products than this. Being out-o-focus is the deal clincher for winnowing a fake from the real deal. The toughest part to fake would be the connector and headset port. Do the headphones connect top or bottom this time? If you're not sure, obsure that view in your photo. Nice try.

As it turns out the real thing will likely look very much like this. I didn't like the chubby nano. Looking forward to the return to thin.

It is probably bigger because the device will do more... there is a significant hardware and software upgrade with this version of the nano, and the more powerful hardware requires a little more space.

Well, I would say photo is a fake as Apple has not been selling ipods in those plastic boxes for a couple of years now.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but they have been shipped in card boxes as these are "green" unlike the plastic boxes which are evil!

Rock and a hard place...

some people want Apple to revise it's iPod lineup, maybe some people do not. This Nano has a larger screen and more memory. It might even have a WiFi chip in it. How do you increase battery life considerably in the same size package? You probably can't and so the package becomes larger.

If people are looking for newer models, maybe they want them to be distinguishable from earlier models. I don't know how Apple has to choose what to do in order to keep everyone satisfied. Wait until you try the new Nano or at least see what it offers before you pass judgment.
