T-Mo G1 Launch on Sept 23

T-Mobile is finally set to introduce its G1 smartphone this month, according to separate sources allegedly slipping information to Reuters. The news outlet claims that Google and T-Mobile will team up for a special event in New York to announce the first phone based on Android and that September 23rd has been mentioned as the most likely date for the press gathering. Neither of the involved companies has been able or willing to comment.

A September introduction would clear the way for a launch in November or earlier for the G1, which should be the finished name for the HTC Dream and will represent T-Mobile USA's first direct answer to the iPhone. The G1 is known to have a touchscreen interface as well as a Sidekick-style hidden QWERTY keyboard and a trackball. It should also be T-Mobile's first 3G-capable smartphone and carry both GPS and Wi-Fi.
