T-Mobile sends invite for Android launch

T-Mobile today sent an invite for a New York City event that will introduce the first production Android phone. The release is short on details but confirms that Google will attend the event, which takes place the morning of September 23rd. The news validates leaks pointing to the same date as the introduction date for the HTC Dream, which most now believe will be rebranded as the T-Mobile G1 when it goes on sale.

The G1 is regarded as a direct competitor to the iPhone and is characterized by its three different control methods, which include a touchscreen as well as a hidden QWERTY keyboard and a trackball for using the interface without requiring exposed fingers. It should be one of T-Mobile's first 3G smartphones and will carry both GPS and Wi-Fi.

An actual ship date for the Google-backed device isn't known, though the official word of an advance release follows the same day as a leak which implies a late October shipping window that has since been narrowed down in one claim to October 20th.

Just a thought

This should be interesting.

Just a thought. While the iPhone / iPod Touch have the same name and basically work the same as the units that come before them, you can still be cool if you are a generation or two out of date. And you do not have to relearn everything.

With everyone else, it seems that every time they come out with a new model, they change most everything. Change the color, change the interface. Change the name, change the interface.

OK, not everytime, but pretty close.

Just a thought.
