Casio on Thursday unveiled what it says is the sharpest display yet and took significant steps towards making HD video possible on mobile devices. Although measuring just two inches diagonally, the display uses a new hyper amorphous silicon LCD with an extremely small pixel structure and 15.5 micron dot pitch that lets Casio produce a 960x540 resolution. The output is a full quarter that of 1080p HD and results in an extremely dense 546 dots per inch, generating a near print-like quality to the final image.
The apparent breakthrough also comes with few sacrifices in other areas, the company claims. Images still carry a complete 16.7 million colors and have a 160-degree viewing arc from any direction, guaranteeing a picture otherwise the same as for many much simpler 320x240 LCDs.
Casio hasn't said how soon it expects the new two-inch LCD to reach shipping products, though the product is likely to translate to cellphones, digital cameras, and portable media players. Such displays also often scale upwards to larger models with similar or higher resolutions. [via Akihabara]

...er, what's the point?
impressive
It's "546 pixel per inch", not dots - the latter is used in relation to physical print output, as in ink dots.
Still, 546 ppi is pretty damn inpressive. And way above print resolution, not "near" it... print is usually 300-400 dpi.
I want a 30" one
Now just think if you could do this with a 30" monitor. Talk about high resolution.
Personal cinema
Put a couple of these on a head-mounted display and I'd be willing to buy it. Current HMDs have low-resolution LCDs that just aren't worth it. And at 2" diagonal, it would give a wonderfully wide field of view, almost like sitting in a theater.
