AMD Radeon HD 4830

A set of presentation slides have leaked today at VR-Zone that indicate AMD is developing a new video chipset to outperform NVIDIA's mid-range offerings at a budget price. The Radeon HD 4830 would sit just below the 4850 by keeping the 256-bit memory bus but carrying 640 stream (effect and geometry) processors versus the 800 of faster Radeon HD cards. It would also carry slightly slower GDDR3 graphics memory in place of GDDR4 or GDDR5.

Boards made with the card would be functionally equivalent and permit 7.1-channel audio pass-through over HDMI, CrossFireX multi-card support and full HD video decoding.

The cost and launch date would be instrumental to the Radeon HD 4830, according to the slides. A 512MB card should cost below $150 at retail, competing with the 9800 GT, and would arrive comparatively quickly on October 21st. AMD traditionally delivers such video chipsets both to stores and to computer builders using them in mass-manufactured PCs.
