Dell intros printers

Dell on Tuesday released no less than five new mid- to high-end printers to add to its range, including the nearly identical all-in-one V505 and V505w, the photo all-in-one P703w and the 5330dn and 2335dn laser printers. The main difference between the V505w and V505 is the former’s inclusion of a Wi-Fi module that allows for wireless connections to a user’s network. Apart from this distinction, the two share the same exterior look and are capable of printing, scanning, faxing and copying documents.

Their print speeds are fixed at 31 pages per minute when black ink is used, or 27ppm in color. Dual-sided printing is supported as well, and either will allow users to copy, fax or print images via their built-in memory card slots, USB ports and PictBridge interface without the need for the connected PC to be turned on. The printers can create 4,800x1,200dpi pages in color or 4,800x2,400dpi in black.

A 1,200x1,200 pixel scanner creates high-resolution digital copies of photos and other materials, while the company’s integrated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software allows for the editing of scanned text. A $5 donation from the sale of either is made to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa.

The P703w is a photo all-in-one printer, able to create 1,200x1,200dpi resolution photos. A 3-inch color LCD display makes it possible to preview and edit images without having to use a PC, also thanks to the included memory card slots and USB ports. Its wireless network support allows for cable-free connections to networks and PCs and the printer can also function as a copier and scanner. Print speeds for letter-size documents are set at 31ppm in black or 26ppm in color.

The 5330dn laser printer is the workhorse of the range, capable of producing as much as 250,000 pages per month at print speeds up to 50ppm. Quality is set at 600x600dpi, and two-sided printing is supported. It hooks up to home or office networks via its Gigabit-NIC network support.

Users who want the speed and workload handling of a laser printer but the multifunctional capabilities of an inkjet can turn to the 2335dn four-in-one, which is capable of printing at 35ppm and 600x600dpi, faxing, copying and scanning. It has a Wi-Fi connection for networks. Dell rates the 2335dn’s monthly duty cycle at 35,000 pages.

The V505 is priced at $139, the V505w at $189, while the P703 costs $199. The 5330dn laser printer has a $1,298 price tag, while the 2335dn lists for $549.
